I'm Cheryl,
In life, I have many roles: wife, mother, grandmother, artist, teacher, and adventurer. I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art Education from Adams State University under the instruction of painter Steve Quiller, ceramist Cloyd Snook, and others.
A day in my life in rural Colorado is a flurry of activity. Whether it’s attending my grandchildren’s activities, tending to the cattle, hiking, fishing and camping in the mountains, riding and training my horses, or working in my garden, I’m constantly on the go finding inspiration for my art.
Art allows me to slow down and focus on the minute details that often go unnoticed in my busy life. Sitting down with a cup of coffee and painting or sculpting is a transformative and sacred experience. Art is essential to me. It allows me to constructively express and challenge myself. It is the outlet I need that allows me to respond to my environment and personal experiences. The finished piece also plays an important role in the continuous process of the art cycle.
Through the process of creating and completing, I developed an earnest desire to start another piece using what I’ve learned and new inspirations to create. Working in many mediums, but particularly watercolor and clay sculpture, my subject usually contains women and children, horses, and Western life. This enables me to paint and sculpt what I know and touches me personally. It allows me to share my experiences, insights, and inspiration through my art.
My intent is for my art to reach the viewer, to tug at the heart with nostalgia, or to spark a desire to connect to the message or beauty expressed in the art. My art business has been designated as a 'Trusted Art Seller' with which means you can shop with confidence and know that I stand behind the quality and value of my products.
Many things inspire me to create art. My passions in life, family, horses, and nature are major inspirations. I’m also inspired by wanting to try new techniques and ideas.
I love to create paintings with lots of visual texture, extreme values, and bold colors. For texture, I leave brush strokes visible, and splatter paint. For values, I often have extreme light and dark values. For bold colors, I leave pure pigment in many areas.
Finishing my first mural was a real career highlight for me. The mural is 9'x72' and titled 'Running Thunder.' Plus there is the norm, receiving awards in different art shows, especially when I earn Best of Show! I have had a couple of solo exhibits and a few group exhibits.
